Many fiction writers use AI not to write their books, but to think through problems, develop ideas and get feedback faster.
Brainstorming
- "Give me 20 what-if premises combining [genre] and [theme]."
- "Suggest 10 surprising ways this scene could end."
- "What would make this villain's motivation more understandable?"
Worldbuilding and characters
Ask AI to interview you about your world and characters. Its questions often reveal gaps: economics, history, a character's fears and contradictions.
Plot and structure
Here's my plot summary: [summary]. Map it to a three-act structure,
point out where the middle sags, and suggest 3 ways to raise the stakes
before the midpoint.
Feedback on drafts
Paste a chapter and ask for feedback as a specific reader: "a fan of fast-paced thrillers" or "an editor focused on dialogue". Ask what's confusing or slow, not just what's good.
Keep your voice
Voice is what makes fiction memorable. If you use AI-drafted passages, rewrite them thoroughly. Many writers prefer to keep AI out of the prose entirely.
Publishing considerations
Some publishers, contests and platforms have AI policies or require disclosure. Check before you submit.
