“Prompt engineering” sounds technical, but it simply means writing instructions that help an AI give you what you need. If you can write a clear email to a colleague, you can write a good prompt.
What is a prompt?
A prompt is the text you give an AI tool: a question, an instruction, a document to work on, or all three. The AI predicts a helpful response based on your words and what it learned during training. Different words lead to different results, which is why prompting is a skill.
Talk to it like a smart new colleague
Imagine a very capable person who knows a lot about everything but nothing about you or your project. What would they need to know to do a great job? That's what belongs in your prompt.
Your first good prompt
Instead of:
Write about healthy breakfasts.
Try:
I'm a busy parent with 10 minutes in the morning. Give me 5 healthy breakfast ideas my kids (ages 6 and 9) will actually eat, each with a short ingredient list.
The second prompt explains who it's for, the constraint, the audience and the format.
Keep the conversation going
You don't have to get it right the first time. Follow up: “Make them dairy-free”, “Add a shopping list”, “Which can I prepare the night before?” The AI remembers the conversation and refines its answer.
Check important facts
AI can be confidently wrong. For anything important, such as health, money, legal questions or facts you'll publish, double-check with a trusted source.
Learn from good examples
The fastest way to improve is to see prompts that work. Every prompt on this site is free to copy; try a few, notice their structure and adapt them to your needs.
