How to Use Claude for Writing, Research and Analysis

Oct 6, 2026 2 min read

Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. Many people choose it for writing and analysis work because it handles long documents well and tends to give thoughtful, well-structured answers.

Work with long documents

You can upload reports, contracts, transcripts or research papers and ask questions across the whole thing. Good prompts include:

  • "Summarize this report for a busy executive in 150 words, then list the 5 biggest risks."
  • "Find every mention of [topic] and quote the relevant lines."
  • "Compare these two documents and list the differences in a table."

Write in your own voice

Paste two or three samples of your writing and ask Claude to describe your style first. Then ask it to draft in that style. Edit the result. You'll get closer to your voice than with generic instructions.

Use Projects for repeat work

Projects let you store instructions and reference files once (a brand guide, product docs or past newsletters) so every chat starts with the right context.

Ask for reasoning, not just answers

For decisions and analysis, ask Claude to lay out assumptions, consider alternatives and point out what information is missing. This makes it easier to spot weak reasoning.

Artifacts for code and documents

Claude can create standalone outputs like documents, small web apps or diagrams in a side panel, which you can edit and reuse.

Good habits

  • Verify facts, figures and citations, especially for anything you'll publish.
  • Be explicit about format: headings, tables or plain prose.
  • Don't paste confidential data unless your organization allows it.
