Google Gemini Tips: Getting the Most from Google's AI

Oct 6, 2026 2 min read

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Its biggest advantage is how it connects to the Google tools many people already use every day.

Use it with Google apps

With extensions or Workspace features enabled, Gemini can search your Gmail, summarize Docs and find files in Drive. Try prompts like:

  • "Summarize the emails from [person] this week and list anything I need to reply to."
  • "Find the latest version of the [project] proposal in my Drive and summarize it."
  • "Draft a reply to this email thread accepting the meeting and proposing Thursday."

Research with fresh information

Because Gemini is connected to Google Search, it's useful for recent topics. Ask it to show sources, and click through to check them before relying on the answer.

Work with images, video and audio

Gemini is multimodal: you can upload a photo of a whiteboard, a chart or a product label and ask questions about it, or have it summarize a YouTube video.

Gems: custom assistants

Gems are saved assistants with their own instructions, such as a "Meeting notes formatter" or "Spanish tutor", so you don't repeat the same setup every time.

Prompting tips

  • Give context and a clear output format, just like with any assistant.
  • Use "double-check" features to see which statements are supported by search results.
  • Review privacy settings to control what's saved to your activity.
