Many parents, teachers and authors are using AI to create personalized picture books. The hardest parts are a good story and consistent illustrations, so here's how to handle both.
1. Write the story
Picture books are short, usually 300–800 words across 12–16 spreads. Ask AI to help brainstorm and structure, but shape the story yourself.
Help me outline a picture book for 4-year-olds about a shy hedgehog
who learns to make friends. 14 pages, simple repeating phrase,
gentle humor and a warm ending. One sentence of text per page.
2. Design your characters
Write a detailed character sheet: species, colors, clothing and distinctive features. Generate a reference image, then reuse that description (and the image, if your tool supports references) on every page.
3. Pick one art style
Decide on a style such as "soft gouache storybook illustration, warm palette" and use exactly the same words in every prompt.
4. Illustrate page by page
Describe each page's scene, leaving space for text. Generate several options and pick the most consistent.
5. Lay it out
Add text in a layout tool with a readable font. Print a test copy before ordering more.
