AI Video Generators Explained: Runway, Sora, Veo and Kling

Oct 4, 2026 2 min read

AI video generation has moved fast. Tools such as Runway, Sora (from OpenAI), Veo (from Google) and Kling can create short video clips from a text description or animate a still image. Availability, pricing and features change frequently, so check each tool's current offering, but the way you prompt them is broadly the same.

What they can do

  • Text-to-video: describe a scene and get a short clip
  • Image-to-video: animate a photo or illustration
  • Video editing: change styles, extend clips or alter elements (in some tools)

Clips are usually short, often several seconds to a few dozen seconds, so most projects combine multiple clips in an editor.

Good uses

  • B-roll and atmospheric shots for YouTube and social media
  • Concept visuals, mood films and storyboards
  • Product and ad concepts
  • Music visuals and loops

How to prompt for video

  1. Describe one shot, not a whole story.
  2. Name the camera movement: slow dolly in, tracking shot, aerial, static.
  3. Set the scene: location, time of day, weather.
  4. Describe the light and style: golden hour, neon, documentary, 35mm film.
  5. Keep motion simple: one main action works better than many.
Slow tracking shot of a cyclist riding along a coastal road at sunrise, waves crashing below, warm golden light, cinematic 35mm film look.

Current limitations

Expect occasional issues with hands, text, physics and keeping characters consistent between clips. Generate several versions, keep the best, and use reference images where tools support them.

Use responsibly

Don't create misleading videos of real people or events, respect each platform's content rules and label AI-generated footage where appropriate.
